Writing

This year, the children will be analysing and immersing; writing and editing; revising and publishing their very best written work in the style of the following genres:

  • journalistic
  • flashback narratives and adventure stories
  • diary entry
  • journals
  • information leaflets
  • non-chronological reports
  • discussion texts (argument)
  • biographies and auto-biographies

You can help you child by reading these styles to them at home and encouraging them to discuss the features of each genre.

You can help your child by: encouraging them to use the different spellings and sentence types you see them practising for homework within their writing. e.g. if they bring a homework about adverbials or passive voice - can they apply this into a written paragraph.

We also find that children at this stage are confident writers but need additional support to edit and revise their writing - spotting errors and correcting them for example.

Below are some skills mats so that you can see the basic skills children are expected to apply into their writing at this stage.
