Dear Parents,
We are pleased to
welcome you and your child to St. John’s Primary
school.
We aim to provide a
happy and caring environment for your child within
which we encourage high standards of achievement and
behaviour. All children are offered a wide range of
balanced learning opportunities to help them grow
into independent and responsible people.
We feel that we can
only achieve the best for your child by having close
co-operation between home and school. During the
time your child spends at school there will be many
opportunities for you to share in your child’s
education. The staff and myself will be happy to
discuss any aspects of school and your child’s
development.
All the information
given is correct at the time of printing but it is
possible that changes may be made during the
academic year.
We look forward to
sharing with you this very important period in your
child’s life and hope that you and your family have
an enjoyable association with St. John’s School.
Yours sincerely,
J.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
All Nursery Uniform
can be purchased from either
SMART
or
CLIVE MARKS
Lunchtime
All children stay on
the school premises and have school lunches or bring
their own sandwiches.
Home time
At the end of the
day Reception and Nursery children can be collected
from their classes. Classes 1 and 2 are lead out of
the pupil exit onto the yard where they stand with
the teacher and wait until they are collected by an
adult. Staff are careful about who collects your
child so it is vital that you inform the school
about any change of adult taking responsibility for
your child at this time of day. If for any reason
your child is not collected, then he/she will be
taken back to the classroom to ensure his/her
well-being and we will contact you.
Children from other
classes are dismissed from their classrooms.
Children are reminded to go back into school if
there is nobody to collect them.
Children attending
the After School Club wait in their classrooms for a
member of the Care Club staff to collect them.
Please Note:
Smoking is not
permitted in the school buildings or within the
school grou
Parents will be
invited to visit the school on other occasions to
share our assemblies, sporting activities and book
fairs etc.
PARENTS AS PARTNERS
Parents are valued
and welcomed as partners in the education process,
the formal part of which takes place within school.
The school encourages parental involvement in many
ways. Some parents offer support within school and
may work alongside a teacher as a volunteer helper.
The school benefits significantly from parental help
in such areas as the school library, additional
reading and working on resources.
SCHOOL POLICIES
BEHAVIOUR
Below is a summary
of our School Policy outlining our high expectations
of good behaviour.
AIMS:
·
It is
the school’s intention that children have the
opportunity to learn to the best of their ability.
·
The
school holds the view that learning takes place more
readily in a positive atmosphere.
·
The
school accepts that it has a duty to teach and
expect good behaviour.
·
The
overall aims of the school include many aspects
which demonstrate the value placed on positive
relationships between individuals.
Children who behave
well and display good manners are commended. This
appropriate behaviour is used as a positive model
for others. It is the aim of the school to foster
and to develop a caring community in which children
and staff show respect, tolerance and consideration
for each other. Our emphasis is on acknowledging
good behaviour, the kind actions and responsibility
demonstrated by the children.
Children are
regularly reminded of how they should behave.
Should a child
continue to display inappropriate behaviour, then a
range of sanctions, designed to be fair, may be
used. For example, a child may be made to lose a
playtime session or to lose some other privilege as
a punishment.
The support of
parents is invaluable and if a child persistently
misbehaves the parents will be invited to discuss
the problem with the Headteacher or class teacher,
with a view to seeking a solution.
The support and
co-operation of all parents, in the application of
our code of behaviour and maintaining discipline, is
invaluable. We aim to promote good working
relationships between parents and staff so that high
standards of behaviour and positive attitudes are
encouraged both in school and at home.
In accordance with
the education Act 1986, corporal punishment is not
administered in this school.
ATTENDANCE, EQUAL
OPPORTUNITIES AND CHILD PROTECTION
These policies are
included in this Prospectus. Please see the
complete list of other policies that are available
from school for you to read if you wish. (These
can be obtained via the school office).
CHARGING AND
REMISSIONS POLICY
The Governors have
adopted the policies approved by Staffordshire
education Committee as follows:-
CHARGING POLICY
a)
Board
and lodging charges: where the board and lodging is
directly provided by the County Council through the
Outdoor Education Centres, a daily charge, reviewed
annually, will be made. In other cases there will
be a charge equivalent to an apportionment of the
charge.
b)
Individual instrumental tuition: charges will be
made.
c)
Hire
of musical instruments for home practising: an
annual charge reviewed annually will be made as a
contribution to the cost of repairs and
replacement. In all other cases where charges are
permitted by section 109 of the 1988 Act for
activities wholly or mainly outside school hours, a
charge equivalent to an apportionment of the cost of
the activity to the County Council will be made.
REMISSION POLICY
a)
When
pupils go on residential trips in circumstances
where section 109 of the 1988 Act would permit
charges for board and lodging only, these charges
will be wholly remitted if parents are in receipt of
Income Support or Family Credit.
b)
When
pupils hire musical instruments the normal annual
hiring charge will be wholly remitted if parents are
in receipt of Income Support or Family Credit.
RAISING CONCERNS AND RESOLVING COMPLAINTS
From time to time
parents and others connected with the school will
become aware of matters which cause them concern.
To encourage resolution of such situations the
Governing Body has adopted a General Complaints
Procedure.
The procedure is
devised with the intention that it will:
·
Usually be possible to resolve problems by informal
means
·
Be
simple to use and understand
·
Be
non-adversarial
·
Provide confidentiality
·
Allow
problems to be handled swiftly
·
Address all points at issue
·
Inform
future practice so that the problem is unlikely to
recur
Full details of the
procedure may be obtained from the school office or
from the Clerk to the Governing Body.
ABSENCE
If your child is
absent please notify the school office by telephone
before 10.30 a.m on the first day of absence. It is
important that all absences are accounted for as any
without notification will be regarded as ‘unauthorised’.
A form requesting permission for absence due to
special circumstances or a family holiday (maximum
two weeks per year) may be obtained from the school
office.
ILLNESS
It is essential that
you keep your child at home if they are ill. Please
do not send them to school if they are unwell, as
there are no facilities to cater for sick children.
If your child has
had sickness or diarrhoea, then they must stay at
home for 24 hours after the symptoms have ended.
If your child
becomes ill whilst at school you will be contacted
so that you can take them home. It is therefore
essential that the school has an up to date
telephone number and address where you may be
contacted. The school should also be given an
emergency contact in case you should be unavailable.
MEDICINES
If it is essential
that medicines be administered during the day,
please complete the relevant form which is available
from the school office.
The school has an
‘Asthma’ Policy which allows children to have
‘reliever’ inhalers in school at all times, should
they be needed. A ‘School’ inhaler is kept for
emergency use.
PLEASE NOTE:
All medication MUST be clearly labelled.
PARENT TEACHERS
ASSOCIATION
The school has a
thriving Parent Teacher Association which organises
fund raising activities and social events. All
parents are more than welcome to attend the
meetings. Details of meetings are advertised on
posters around school and also in the weekly school
newsletter.
We have strong links
with Keele University and involve children in
exciting projects.
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL
NEEDS
The governors have
responsibility for Special Educational Needs. The
school has special concern that there is early
identification of children who may have learning
difficulties, so that appropriate intervention and
help can take place as soon as possible. The school
has been identified as a “Pathway School” to help
advance the inclusion policy.
The school adheres
to the Code of Practice for Special Educational
Needs and, should the need arise, a child’s progress
will be monitored and supported under the
supervision of our Special Needs Co-ordinator.
Close involvement of parents will be sought as the
school is well aware of the crucial role that
parents play in their child’s learning.
THE LEA PROVIDES A
PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICE AND SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
SERVICE TO ADVISE AND SUPPORT PARENTS AND SCHOOL
ABOUT SUCH CONCERNS.
The school is also
aware of the needs of the more able children. We do
our utmost to ensure that each child works to
his/her ability and achieves his/her maximum
potential.
N.B.
It is not compulsory to wear school uniform, but
all pupils are expected to attend school
appropriately dressed and so the school has adopted
these guidelines on dress.
Please ensure that
all items of clothing and footwear are labelled
clearly with your child’s name.
